News FlashThe First International Workshop on Radiological Sciences and Applications (IWRSA), Issues and Challenges of Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) Proliferation, was held June 16-18, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA. Seventy (70) experts from 10 countries including Austria, Canada, Czech Republic, France, Israel, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, New Zealand, Uzbekistan, and U.S.A. attended the workshop that was sponsored by the Radiochemistry Society. The two-and-a-half day workshop included twenty three (23) oral presentations and seven (7) group discussions that included a variety of topics such as Nuclear Transparency and Nonproliferation, Security and Related Technologies, WMD Monitoring, Consequence Management and Radiological Depressive Devices (RDDs), Dismantlement and Material Management, International Cooperation, Training, and Threat, safeguard, and Vulnerability Analysis. Participants in the workshop who represented government, academia, industry, and national laboratories, discussed policy, economics, technological, and sociological aspects of international terrorism and WMD proliferation. Numerous issues and challenges were identified for future detailed discussions, and plans for establishing new collaborations, as well as expanding the existing ones, were proposed. Among these issues, international cooperation in training and academic exchange received special attention.
